Evidence for a hard equation of state in the cores of neutron stars

چکیده
The equation of state for matter with energy density above 2 × 10 gm/cm is parametrized by P = kN , where N is the number density, Γ is the adiabatic index, and k a constant. Using this scheme to generate thousands of models, together with data on neutron star masses, it is found, for a core region with constant adiabatic index, that the central density must satisfy 10 gm/cm < ρc < 10 16 gm/cm, with Γ > 2.2. Further preliminary results indicate, based on the observed neutrino flux from supernova 1987a, that this number must be considerably higher, on the order of 3.5. These results provide evidence for a hard equation of state in the cores of neutron stars. Author’s note: This paper was originally submitted to the Astrophysical Journal circa 1995. It is uploaded here by request of new authors who are currently exploring the use of a similar parameterization scheme for similar purposes. The figures and tables referred to in the paper are no longer available.

Spin and Isospin Asymmetry, Equation of State and Neutron Stars
In the present work, we have obtained the equation of state for neutron star matter considering the in uence of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin state. We have also investigated the structure of neutron stars. According to our results, the spin asymmetry stiens the equation of state and leads to high mass for the neutron star.
متن کاملDifferent Magnetic Field Distributions in Deformed Neutron Stars
In this work, we review the formalism which would allow us to model magnetically deformed neutron stars. We study the effect of different magnetic field configurations on the equation of state (EoS) and the structure of such stars. For this aim, the EoS of magnetars is acquired by using the lowest order constraint variational (LOCV) method and employing the AV18 potential....
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملTheory of cooling neutron stars versus observations
We review current state of neutron star cooling theory and discuss the prospects to constrain the equation of state, neutrino emission and superfluid properties of neutron star cores by comparing the cooling theory with observations of thermal radiation from isolated neutron stars.
متن کاملPhases of Dense Matter in Neutron Stars
After a brief history of neutron stars and supernovae recent developments are discussed. Based on modern nucleon-nucleon potentials more reliable equations of state for dense nuclear matter have been constructed. Furthermore, phase transitions such as pion, kaon and hyperon condensation, superfluidity and quark matter can occur in cores of neutron stars. Specifically, the nuclear to quark matte...
